My weekend was wonderful. On
Saturday our PDPI group took a field trip to Topeka, the capital city of
Kansas. We took the bus at around 11:15, and our first stop was The Old Prairie
Town, where we knew some important buildings. The first building was the
Mansion, where the Ward-Meade lived. We saw the rooms, the furniture, the
clothes, and many objects used by the family. We had a nice lady to guide us
and tell all about the place. Then, we knew the railroad with all its peculiar
objects, the schoolhouse, the old-fashioned drugstore – called Potwin Drug,
where we could have some delicious ice-cream at the end of the trip, and the
church – a Methodist Episcopal one. After leaving Old Prairie Town, we went to
the Kansas Museum of History, which is an interesting one, since it has many representative
objects that contribute to tell Kansas’ history. We could see a big train,
television, pictures, uniforms, guns, and so on. Also, we could find a gift
shop, full of beautiful things, and then I bought a gorgeous t-shirt.
It was
a totally new experience, since I am in another country and I learned a completely different culture. It is thrilling to be in the same place where those ancient people lived, looking at the school they studied, the church they prayed, the objects they used. The museum is the proper place to experience and explore the Midwestern American lifestyle and culture. I recommend this experience to everyone, specially for those particularly interested in history.
